Regarding UI and approachability for beginner web developers, AceHTML 6 is a bread and butter HTML editor. You won’t find some of the more flashy features of professional grade web design tools, but you will find a reliable utility with plenty of handy extras. Both experienced webmasters and novice site creators will appreciate AceHTML 6 Pro’s straightforward approach.
Make no mistake, users that have little to zero experience with HTML will struggle with AceHTML 6. It does feature informative reference files, but ultimately, this is not a WYSIWYG program. Given that users are comfortable dabbling in some code, AceHTML 6 checks HTML for faulty code. Novices can experiment under the watchful care of AceHTML 6.
On the whole, HTML savvy users will have no problem navigating AceHTML 6 Pro. There’s even the option to customize the toolbars to suit your needs.
AceHTML 6 will look familiar to anyone who’s ever used HomeSite. What you won’t see is the fancy effects of pro web and graphics design tools. But, given the light weight and functional philosophy of AceHTML 6 this isn’t much of a surprise. The HTML editor, in addition to providing a friendly sandbox for toying around with HTML, provides support for Perl, XML, WML, ASP, PHP, CSS and JavaScript.
We like AceHTML 6’s built-in safeguard measures—the program validates links and checks code fidelity. For tedious tasks, AceHTML 6 will remember code you’ve used and will autocomplete recognizable code sequences.
We appreciate the fact that AceHTML 6 features an expansive library of code snippets. This provides both an excellent template resource for projects and a great reference point for experimentation.
Users expecting an FTP client should be forewarned that although AceHTML 6 is FTP ready, it doesn’t come with a discrete client. You’ll have to download AceHTML’s sister program AceFTP for the client.
AceHTML’s community isn’t as active as it was previously. You can still find FAQs and tutorials on their site. They respond to user emails and bug reports as well.
At just under $70, AceHTML 6 Pro isn’t the cheapest program we reviewed. We do however consider it to be a great value given its feature set. We really appreciate the freeware trial version available for testing before you commit to a purchase.
Despite an occasional bug and the comparatively barebones CSS editor onboard AceHTML 6, we have few complaints. For experienced developers and intermediate site creators, AceHTML 6 is a program we can recommend with comfort. For first timers, we would recommend a more WSISYG, visual design program.
Pros
It includes page templates, code snippets and a preview mode.
Cons
The software is FTP-ready but isn't equipped with its own FTP client and doesn't have a WYSIWYG interface.
It's a no-frills application that ultimately falls short of its more flashy competitors.
